sermon notes & questions:

1 Thessalonians – Introduction | Todd Nighswonger, Lead Pastor & Elder

Synopsis: The main theme of 1 Thessalonians is this: hope. Most times, by hope we mean a personal wish or aspiration. However, in Scripture, it is not that uncertain. Instead, hope is the sure expectation and correct desire for something good in the future. And for the Thessalonians, what made their hope more than a wish or aspiration, was that it was certain and secure, found “in our Lord Jesus Christ before our God and Father” (1:3).

Questions:

  1. In 1 Thessalonians 1:3, Paul showed the Thessalonian Christians that their actions—“work,” “labor,” and “steadfastness”—were the result of their “faith,” “love,” and “hope.” What are some of the dangers of seeking to produce actions—“work,” “labor,” and “steadfastness”—that don’t come from “faith,” “love,” and “hope”?

  2. What happens when our “faith,” “love,” and “hope” are found in things outside of Christ? Specifically, what happens to us when we begin to find our hope outside of Christ?

As followers of Jesus, we are always seeking to learn more of God's story, the truth it communicates, how this truth changes us, and how to share it with others. We are inviting you to join us for these foundational equipping classes because Core 4 is an essential part of how we are seeking to BE and MAKE disciples together. We hope you can come!
