SERMON NOTES ➔

Todd Nighswonger, Elder & Lead Pastor

Fishers of Men”
Series: The Great Commission, Apprenticing With Jesus

Synopsis: In Matthew 5:12-25, Jesus reiterated John the Baptist’s message that we learned about in chapter 3: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” That word “repent” is very important to the Gospel of Matthew and to being an apprentice of Jesus. Whether a person repents or doesn’t will determine the course of their life (as we will see). Peter, and his fishing colleagues, repent, and their lives are forever changed. They entered the discipleship pathway of Jesus and went on an incredible and life-altering journey to which Jesus invites all. Todd told the story from both Mathew and Luke 5:1-11, clarifying six important aspects of repentance: (1) pay attention, (2) surrender, (3) confess, (4) leave behind, (5) receive, and (6) follow Jesus. He stressed that these aspects are crucial to our initial encounter with Jesus Christ and are to be practiced for a lifetime.

Community Group Discussion QUESTIONS:

At Cornerstone, we define a disciple as “a follower of Jesus who is learning from Jesus, trusting Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and helping others do the same.” As we continue through the Gospel of Matthew, discuss these questions in your group and/or for personal reflection throughout the week:

  1. What can I/we learn from Jesus in these verses?

  2. How do these verses call and help me/us to trust Jesus?

  3. What attributes about Jesus are evident in these passages, and how can I/we become more like him?

  4. What are some practical ways I/we can help others to learn from, trust, and become like Jesus?

For weekly group discussion guides related to each sermon, please see our community guides below
